Civica becomes signatory to the Tech Talent Charter

As a global business working to achieve better outcomes for people and communities, we believe that a diverse workplace should be the norm

As part of Civica’s continued focus on attracting, recruiting and retaining the right people for the right roles, the company has become a signatory to the Tech Talent Charter (TTC). The TTC is an employer-led initiative which encourages greater diversity in the UK’s tech workforce, and was supported in the government’s policy paper on the UK Digital Strategy earlier this year.

Civica, and other signatories of the charter, will make a number of pledges in relation to their approach to recruitment and retention, with progress continually shared with its people, partners and customers.

Debbie Forster, CEO of TTC said: “It’s vital for the industry to come together as a whole to do more to show females that a career in technology is incredibly rewarding, to increase the number of females working within the industry, to attract people who are considering a career change, and to encourage younger generations to consider these careers from the word go.

“One single company can’t do it alone, which is why we’re asking organisations to pledge their support for the Tech Talent Charter and join us on our exciting journey.”

Civica strives to ensure its entire recruitment process is fair and transparent, with this commitment to diversity not faltering once the best people are inducted. Whilst women hold 41% of management positions at Civica, the company aims to increase the visibility of women in leadership and ensure that these opportunities are as achievable as they are for men of the same ability. The first cohort of its training programme for potential leaders was predominantly women, with an increasing number of women passing through the programme year-on-year.

With gender stereotypes forming at an early age, Civica looks to inspire young people of all genders, that a career in tech is exciting, rewarding and not just confined to the walls of a laboratory. The company is a proud partner of Young Enterprise, giving young people a mentor and role model in the IT industry, and continues to collaborate with primary schools through its Coding for Kids scheme, launched by a female graduate at Civica.

Julie Chell, Chief People Officer, identified that diversity begins with investing in the future.

“Becoming a TTC signatory pledges our commitment to securing the right talent to future-proof our organisation. With our growing proportion of women in leadership, aided in time by recruiting more graduates and apprentices and investing in everyone’s learning and development, we’ll be on track for a more gender-balanced workforce.”

Wayne Story, CEO and Chief Diversity Sponsor, praised how the TTC is a step in the right direction.

“The TTC gives us an extra platform to enhance our approach to diversity and inclusion. We’ve made significant strides in the last year alone, but we can never do too much.

“A lack of women in technology roles is not a challenge unique to Civica. By collectively working with the TTC and other tech companies, we’re acknowledging that change, while overdue, is entirely possible to achieve.”
