Our history

Since Civica in its current form was established in 2000, we’ve grown to become one of the UK’s largest software companies and a global leader in software for public services. During that time, our team has grown to 5,000 colleagues, one-third of whom have worked in the sectors we serve. With long-lasting customer relationships and a strong track record of delivery, we’ve produced an unbroken record of sustainable growth.

With a pedigree throughout in supporting local government, we established our Housing & Communities division in 2007 to serve a wide range of social housing, community protection and emergency service providers. We then followed with the creation of our specialist health & care division in 2009 and the expansion of our education activities globally in 2012. Building on our support for central government departments and agencies, we formed a new division in 2016 to expand our work as a trusted partner for government digital services.

Our cloud-first strategy has seen Civica significantly increase the adoption of cloud software, with our broad range of solutions now used by 3,500 customers. More recently, while growing the use of our software, we have increased momentum with strategic developments focused around cloud, digital enablement, software innovation and data analytics. During 2019 we also launched our North Star ‘lab’ to build on our position as an innovation leader and accelerate the application of new ideas and technologies for customers.

Acquiring new software capability and innovation

Acquisitions are a core part of our strategy to add quality software assets and capabilities in response to evolving customer needs and market developments. Since 2015 Civica has acquired and successfully integrated 25 highly complementary organisations in line with our sector focus and strategy. Most recently these have included school management SaaS provider Parago Software, digital health specialist InfoFlex and Asset Edge, which specialises in providing cloud-based applications for asset management.

In November 2018, we acquired ERS Group, the UK’s leading provider of software and services for election management, membership engagement, democracy and governance. Following integration, we launched a new Democracy & Engagement division, which supports a wide range of organisations internationally and is helping to accelerate digital democracy.
